Where Is The World's Data Being Stored:

Difference Between Google+ & FB:

Google not rolling Orkut into Google+

Remember   Orkut ? Well, Google certainly does, and it looks like the social blast from the internet’s past is here to stay for the time being. According to a faceless Google rep, the company has no plans at the moment to either retire Orkut   or   to roll its functionality into   Google+   (despite the immediate success of the younger project). Nobody would blame you if you don’t remember Orkut. While it’s been around for over   seven years , it never really took off to the extent that contemporaries like MySpace and Facebook did. At least, not in English-speaking countries, anyway. While the web-savvy social generation of Westerners has all but shunned Orkut as a social network, people in countries like India and Estonia have flocked to it year after year, bringing its home page to an Alexa rank of 102 (an extremely big ranking for something people tend to forget ever existed). Meanwhile, feedback to Google’s Vic Gundotra Google+ post today   detaile...

Google+ Is Being Changed This Week Based On User Feedback:

It’s been a couple of weeks since   Google+   launched, and with the exception of   China already blocking its use, people do seem to like it. That’s good news for Google after the failures of Buzz and Wave, and bad news for   Facebook   who now has a serious competitor in the social network space. You may think Google could sit back and watch the Google+ network grow, but that would be a mistake. The search company has realized it can’t just watch what happens, it needs to respond to users quickly in order to keep them happy and the network growing. While the general view of Google+ is a positive one, there’s also a lot of criticism and user feedback of which Google is about to tackle. Today,   Vic Gundotra, senior vice president of social at Google used his Google+ account to   post a message   confirming there’s “lots of criticism for Google+.” Not only that, but before the end of the week we should start seeing changes to address those criti...

Can Google’s Plus One Take On The Facebook Like?

This morning Google announced a social bombshell, a new service called +1 that competes directly with the Facebook like button as a signal for determining what content is most relevant to an individual. Fortunately for Google, it has the world’s largest search engine to integrate this product with immediately, giving publishers a significant reason to implement +1 within their sites.  Google accounts for more than 50 percent of incoming traffic on most sites, while Facebook is currently running a distant second in referring traffic (more then 10 percent of our own traffic comes from Facebook). For now, the new product is being offered as an experimental service, although there’s no doubt the company plans on making it a widespread feature. How important social is to the world of search is still debatable, but we’ve long argued that it’s a critical component, since liking, tweeting, and now +1ing (what a horrible name by the way) may have much lower friction than placing a hyperlin...

How to use chrome as your PDF reader:

If you’re anything like 99% of everybody, you have some sort of PDF viewing software installed on your PC—but did you realize that you can use Google Chrome to view PDFs from your PC? It’s easy! We’re showing off how to do this in Windows, but theoretically it would work for OS X or Linux as well. If you’ve tried it, let us know in the comments. Enabling Google Chrome as Your Default PDF Reader Start off by right-clicking on any PDF file, and heading to the “Open with” item on the menu. If you don’t see this, you can usually hold Shift and right-click, and it will be there. This will bring up the Open with dialog, which lets you choose what to open your PDF files with, but sadly Google Chrome isn’t listed—but no matter, you can just click the Browse button. If you know where Google Chrome was installed, then just browse to that location—otherwise, you can right-click on the Chrome shortcut, head to Properties, and then Shortcut. You’ll see the location in the Target box (best bet is t...
